At Healesville Primary School we use a variety of methods to teach Mathematics. We use the workshop approach of I do, You do, We do which is based upon the Gradual Release of Responsibility. Our lessons are focussed on a learning intention, they are differentiated, and students work at their individual point of need. Teachers conduct mini-lessons and model particular skills. A variety of concrete materials are also used to further assist the students to understand and conceptualise the task.
In the Senior School students are often involved in problem-solving, where mixed ability groups are used. This provides opportunities for students to learn from each other.
Healesville Primary run an extension program, where students participate in an Australasian Maths Problem Solving Competition – ‘Maths Olympiad’. We are very fortunate to have some very astute mathematicians teaching our students.
